We Buy Lots Of Bottled Water. Is There A More Sustainable Way?

Published

Bottled water is a curious proposition.

Most of us can access safe, potable water anytime we’re thirsty by turning on a faucet. Nonetheless, bottled water is big business, and according to industry trade group Beverage Marketing Corporation, it’s the most popular drink Americans choose to quench their thirst. The non-profit USA Facts, using data from the Centers for Disease Control, found that more than half of all beverages consumed by adults and teens in the US are water, either bottled or unbottled. Sodas and coffee don’t even come close. Soda makes up 11% of beverage consumption by teens, versus 64% for water. In adults, 14% of drinks are coffee; water makes up 54%.

All of this feels like a no-brainer. You need it to stay alive.
